Plasmon energy losses in shear bands of metallic glass

چکیده
Shear bands resulting from plastic deformation in cold-rolled Al88Y7Fe5 metallic glass were observed to display alternating density changes along their propagation direction. Electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) was used investigate the volume plasmon energy losses and around shear bands. Energy shifts of peak centre width (FWHM) reflecting damping precisely determined within an accuracy a few meV using open source python module (Hyperspy) fit shapes zero-loss peaks with Lorentzian functions. The maximum bulk calculated for bright dark band segments relative matrix be about 38 14 meV, respectively. larger denser regions. analysis presented here suggests that plasmons are caused by two contributions: (i) Variable due medium-range order (MRO). This affects static structure factor S(k), which, turn, leads either reduced or increased according Ziman–Baym formula. (ii) ionic effective electron mass appearing zero-momentum frequency formula Ep(q=0) coupled give rise small variations energy. model predicts meV.

Localized crystallization in shear bands of a metallic glass
Stress-induced viscous flow is the characteristic of atomic movements during plastic deformation of metallic glasses in the absence of substantial temperature increase, which suggests that stress state plays an important role in mechanically induced crystallization in a metallic glass. However, it is poorly understood. Here, we report on the stress-induced localized crystallization in individua...
متن کاملShear bands and cracking of metallic glass plates in bending
The thickness dependence of yielding and fracture of metallic glass plates subjected to bending is considered in terms of the shear band processes responsible for these properties. We argue that the shear band spacing ~and length! scales with the thickness of the plate because of strain relaxation in the vicinity of the shear band at the surface. This is consistent with recent measurements of s...

In situ straining transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments were performed to study the propagation of the shear bands in the Zr56.3Ti13.8Cu6.9Ni5.6Nb5.0Be12.5 bulk metallic glass based composite. Contrast in TEM images produced by shear bands in metallic glass and quantitative parameters of the shear bands were analyzed. It was determined that, at a large amount of shear in the glass,...
متن کاملInitiation of shear bands near a stress concentration in metallic glass
Instrumented contact experiments are performed on three metallic glasses to systematically study shear band formation near a stress concentration. The results suggest that high local stresses at a point in the glass are insufficient to initiate a shear band. Rather, the yield strength must be exceeded along the entire length of a viable shear path in order for a shear band to form. Because of t...
متن کاملEffective temperature dynamics of shear bands in metallic glasses.
We study the plastic deformation of bulk metallic glasses with shear transformation zone (STZ) theory, a physical model for plasticity in amorphous systems, and compare it with experimental data. In STZ theory, plastic deformation occurs when localized regions rearrange due to applied stress and the density of these regions is determined by a dynamically evolving effective disorder temperature....
